Paper Mending

New series of paper mending conservation and restoration tutorials which will focus on the techniques and secrets of paper conservation. keep tuned on, these tutorials will be captured regularly in short and informative episodes. Keep tuned 😉

just be careful during the repair process and Don't use:
  • Tape (sellotape), scotch tape, Etc.
  • Filmoplast P Tape, it is archival but not recommended for rare objects due to its reversibility.
  • Heatset tissue (shiny and uses heat). However, it is reversible with isopropyl alcohol, acid-free, and buffered with magnesium carbonate. As well it has long fibers, and it is transparent.

In conclusion, all types of commercial self-adhesive tapes should be avoided in historic document conservat...

clean off adhesive
For rare books restoration and conservation purpose; in many cases, spine lining, and animal glue should be removed (cleaned off) completely, in order to restore and conserve the sewing or the spine.
Several techniques are used for loosening and clean off old glue from spines.
Be careful when you clean off the animal glue from the book spine. Watch this video tutorial, demonstrate one of the most applied practice.

In this video methylcellulose solution with a concentration of 4% has been used (Viscosity: 2000 cPs at 2% in water, pH 7.0.)

What is Electroluminescent

The most common electroluminescent (EL) devices are composed of either powder (primarily used in lighting applications) or thin films for information displays (Wikipedia).

To put it simply, EL lamps or "high field electroluminescent" lamps use electric current directly through a phosphor to make light. Unlike most lamps, they can be shaped to be extremely flat, or in narrow wire-like shapes. Electroluminescence or "EL" is the non-thermal conversion of electrical energy into light energy. This phenomenon is used in EL lamps, LEDs, and OLEDs (edisontechcenter)

A challenging project was done by a teamwork of 8 conservators who are a master student on Conservation of Antique Photographic and Paper Heritage ( EICAP)

http://www.helwan.edu.eg/EICAP

This assignment was assigned by Prof. Simona Inserra for a fully deteriorated 17th-century rare book.

To demonstrate a restoration process under limited or very small budget and absent of most of the conservation labs equipment and in a very short time, this assignment was a good experience for my teamwork for working in a conservation lab that has a limited budget.

Challenges was
The time (only 8 days available)
The materials were limited
The tools were basic

That was the power of teamwork.
